Iron Workers Support Secretary Granholm’s Endorsement of the Mountain Valley Pipeline

May 21, 2023

The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers applauds Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm’s endorsement of the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) in Virginia and West Virginia. Our union represents 128,000 construction and fabrication workers, many of whom work in the energy sector. We ask the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to approve the project.

The Mountain Valley Pipeline would support good union jobs throughout Appalachia. "Construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline from West Virginia to Virginia brings new hope for ironworkers in the region. The project promises to generate a significant number of long-lasting job opportunities and stimulate economic growth,” Iron Workers General Treasurer and West Virginia resident Bill Dean said, “The expertise and hard work of skilled union ironworkers would be crucial to the success of this infrastructure project.” Besides construction of the pipeline itself, the MVP would supply electric generation and manufacturing projects that will put ironworkers to work. This would mean opportunity in a part of the country that needs it most.

This pipeline would provide energy security at home and abroad. A greater supply of natural gas would benefit electricity and heat consumers while adding resiliency to our energy network. Greater American gas export capacity would strengthen our European allies against Russian aggression.

Secretary Granholm’s support for the MVP demonstrates the Biden administration’s commitment to energy jobs. The president’s policy has included natural gas in America’s energy portfolio, and completion of the MVP would help unlock the jobs potential of Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. We hope that FERC agrees with the Secretary’s endorsement and approves completion of the project.
