Safety Training at Department of Energy Site Friday, February 10, 2006

(International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Iron Workers)

A 40 hour Hazardous Material Training Class was recently completed at the HAMMER Training Facility in Richland, WA. This class was conducted by 3 ironworker instructors from Ironworkers Local Union No. 14, Spokane, WA. In addition to providing this essential training, these instructors — Tom Peterson, Mike Tunnell, and Tom Seeley — work at the Hanford Department of Energy (DOE) site located in Richland, WA.

The Hanford DOE site was responsible for the testing and completion of the atomic bomb which was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan to end World War II. There is currently a massive clean-up underway of all waste generated by the production of the A-bomb. The ironworkers play a very large role at the Hanford site, as well as the HAMMER Training Facility.

The training facility trains all personnel working at the Hanford site. This training is performed by tradesmen and tradeswomen using full scale mock-ups as training aids. Further information with regards to the HAMMER Training Facility can be found at the HAMMER web site. Their motto is “The training at HAMMER is as real as it gets!”
